Spoke & Wheel

For those unfamiliar, the 'Spoke & Wheel' framework is a proven method for creating massive SEO growth over time.

The concept is fairly simple.

Let's break it down & see how you can implement it to grow your site.

Structure

If you're familiar with the structure of a wheel, you'll know it's made up of three parts:

  • The hub (center)
  • The wheel (the outer edge that forms a circle)
  • The spokes (supports from the center to the edge)

This exact structure can be mirrored in your website content.

The first thing you need to do is create a Hub.

A Hub is a piece of content (i.e., a page on your site) that addresses a major keyword you want to rank for.

If you sell time tracking software, your Hub might address the keyword 'time tracking software'.

Hub content is designed to be broad, like "What does time tracking software do?".

These keywords are generally hyper-competitive and difficult to rank for.

The second thing you need to do is create your Spokes.

Every spoke you add to your structure supports your wheel, just like a real wheel.

Spokes are other pages on your site that directly relate to the main keyword but are more niche specific.

For example,

"Top 10 time tracking softwares"
"How much does time tracking software cost?"
"Must have features for time tracking software"
"Everything you need to know about time tracking"

These are all great examples of Spokes you might create based on the Hub we discussed above.

Basically, the strategy is to cover the primary topic in as much detail as possible and do so with specific pages for each concept.

The way this all rolls together is with Internal Linking.

Your Hub should cover the entire subject, including all the topics in the Spokes.

But only in a summarized way.

If you reference how much time tracking software costs in just a few sentences on the Hub page, you can link that section to the Spoke page, where the topic is explained in more detail.

This gives people (and Google) a place to understand even more information about the topic.

This inherently makes your Hub page more valuable.

When you do this 3-5-10 times, it can start to become an immensely valuable resource.

The last part of this is the Wheel.

It's fairly simple, the same way you link all the Spokes to the Hub & vice/versa.

You also want to link the Spokes to each other.

This creates the outer wheel structure as each spoke points to the next.

This makes it very easy for people visiting your site to navigate from one topic to the next while keeping all the information relevant to their search.

The main value, however, is that Google now views the ENTIRE STRUCTURE when considering rankings.

It's not just about the content on one page but the content in the structure as a whole.

You're providing so much information & value related to the various searches associated with 'time tracking software' that you're easily viewed as one of the most informative sites on the web.

So the next time you're creating a new page on your site, ask yourself:

Is this a Spoke or a Hub?

If neither... you should probably read this again.

Read Time: 3 Minutes A life lesson from my Dad When I was 9 my Dad and I stopped at a Chick-fil-A in my hometown for lunch. He's a land surveyor, and there was a big project with a tight deadline coming up. So we'd spent all Saturday morning at the office as he chaotically tried to wrap this project up. I (not paying much attention) had a great morning playing on my Gameboy in the corner. While we weren't a poor family, we were not rolling in cash either. We counted money carefully. Going out...

There are always new platforms, new strategies, new opportunities, etc. It's so easy to get caught up chasing trends and whatever the "new thing" is. The problem is this causes marketing teams to make the wrong decisions while chasing shiny objects. The grass isn't greener. So as we go into 2024, this is your reminder that most businesses don't need to reinvent the wheel this year. Often if you have...

The problem is most people don't know how to tell stories. Just like me. But, with thousands of hours in reading, podcasting, leading...
